This rare early Buchan, written while he was a member of Milner's staff in Cape Town and completed within a few months of the Pretoria peace agreement, analyses the future prospects of the four South African colonies, with particular emphasis on the Orange Free State and the Transvaal (the former Boer republics), and concludes that it must be only a matter of time before they are joined in some sort of federal arrangement.
Blue figured and blind-embossed cloth-boards, gilt lettered to the spine, blue printed endpapers, xviii + 494 pp of text and index + 2 folding colour maps.
The spine ends and corners are rubbed. The binding is cracked between the front endpaper and the title page: gauze showing but hinges intact. No owner or other marks and the contents, which are complete, are undiscoloured save at the page edges, which are rough-cut, making this an attractive copy of the first edition.
