Bright green cloth-boards, gilt to upper panel and spine, olive-green aloe-design printed endpapers, xxiv (including Smuts's foreword - see images - lists of subscribers and colour plates and table of flowering times) + 520 pp of b/w-illustrated text, glossary and indexes + 76 inserted colour plates.
CONDITION. The binding is tight. The boards are not shelf-rubbed and the corners are not bumped, but a crack to the outer hinge of the upper board and spine damage have been repaired, with new hand-drawn lettering and image. There are two small tape marks on the front paste-down and there is slight insect damage to the front endpaper. Insect damage to the back endpaper is more widespread. There is a binding crack between the half-title and title pages. Three leaves, including Plate 3, are detached from the binding but in position. Tears to two index leaves (pp 511/514) have been repaired but a 2.5 x 3 cm area of the text on pp 511/512 remains missing. The copy is otherwise complete, unmarked and undiscoloured.
The Lot remains an inexpensive option for those who need a copy of Reynolds's remarkable work but can do without a dustjacket.
