The book consists of100 pages of text, 15 tipped in colour plates plus 3 tipped in black and white photographs, also 47 illustrated pages.
Walter Battiss was raised in Koffiefontein in the Western Cape. The area is well known for its abundance of rock paintings by early man, this and the link to prehistoric art in France and Spain laid the foundation for his interest in this area of art.
After his visits to Europe he worked as a teacher and during his holidays he painted and made engravings at various sites in South Africa and Rhodesia. His background as a Draughtsman and as an artist helped him in his understanding of these primitive forms of art.
