" . . . by Mhlangane Dingane and Mbopa on 22 September 1828 at Dukuza, by which act the Zulu nation first lost its empire"

Cecil Scotnes's 43 colour woodcuts are accompanied by text by Stephen Gray.

The laminated colour dustjacket is edge-chipped at the head and foot of the spine. The fawn cloth-boards, brown to the upper panel and spine, are near-fine, with lightly bumped lower corners and a small dent at the foot of the lower panel. The binding is tight. The front and back plain salmon endpapers each have two 2 x 1 cm tape-marks on the free leaves, but are otherwise unmarked, while the vii + 86 unnumbered pp of illustrations and captions + 9 pp of appendixes, all printed on heavy embossed art stock, have no ownership or other marks and remain bright-white after 38 years.
