This sequel to the Birds of Prey volume (Lot 212)includes 176 full-page colour paintings by Claude Gibney Finch-Davies, who at the time of his early death in 1920 "had illustrated almost half (380) of the bird species known to occur in Southern Africa, completing over 1000 paintings in 30 sketchbooks. While the majority of the illustrations appearing in the book have been selected for their technical excellence, several of his earlier works have been included which demonstrate his developing technique" [from the blurb].
This, copy 964/2750 of the standard Subscribers' edition, is in exceptionally good condition.
The book comes in a black slipcase. The laminated colour dustjacket is lightly edge-chipped. The brown cloth covers, gilt to the spine, are in their original condition. The binding is tight. The plain cornflower endpapers, colour frontispiece and 489 pp of introduction and commentary, including 176 full-page bird paintings, all in colour, are all unmarked and undiscoloured.
