RESTORED

This is a very good copy of the revised edition of Mrs Beeton's famous book, which was edited after her death by her husband, S O Beeton, "with only such alterations and changes as Time has rendered necessary".

Some 180,000 copies of Household Management were printed between 1861 (the year of the first edition) and 1869 (this edition). The main addition was a series of 12 colour plates, printed in colour photogravure by G Silberman of Strasbourg and inserted with tissue guards. Of these, Plate XII was chosen as the frontispiece and 10 others are inserted through the book. The remaining one - Plate IV, which should have been inserted opposite p 337, was missed in this copy by the binders, R Ackrill of Harrogate (whose ticket is on the front free endpaper): there is no evidence between the relevant sections either that the plate was ever there, or that it had been been removed.

Maroon cloth-boards, gilt to spine, green patterned printed endpapers, all page-edges tinted rose, frontispiece, [1] p b/w advertisement + xlii pp of prelims + [4] pp of 2-colour advertisements + 1140 pp of b/w-illustrated text + [8] pp of 2-colour advertisements + the 11 inserted colour plates referred to above + 32 pp of publisher's announcements.

CONDITION. The binding remains tight. The boards are lightly rubbed and the corners are lightly bumped. The spine is lightly sunned and the spine-ends are frayed. The endpapers and a few early leaves are foxed. For the rest, this is a well-preserved copy complete except for the missing plate, unmarked and otherwise undiscoloured. Narrow archival tape has been applied to strengthen the endpapers.
