Portal was assigned to head a government mission to Uganda to assess the region’s problems and possibilities after the withdrawal of the Imperial British East Africa Company. Crossing the Taro Plain and the Kibwezi River, the expedition entered rich game lands with subsequent hunting for rhinoceros and lion. At Port Alice, hippopotamus were bagged, with additional hippo shooting on the Tana River. There are also several mentions of sport in Raymond Portal’s unedited diary. Raymond, brother of Sir Gerald, died of fever on the expedition. Original brick red cloth with gilt African native vignette on front cover and gilt spine titles.
