A particularly pleasing copy of Hobhouse's seminal work on the Anglo-Boer war. After her 1901 unofficial report goaded the British Government into action she returned to the Cape but was refused entry and was essentially detained for a few days and then deported. She wrote The Brunt Of The War in the French Alps and it was published by Methuen in 1902. This copy is inscribed 'Mrs Bodde from the Writer Nov. 14th 1902'. Bodde was a fellow campaigner and is mentioned on page 172. The book also contains a few scattered amendments by Hobhouse, notably the restoration of two of her original captions 'omitted by Printer' to plates. This is a primary source and as far as I can ascertain never seen before; I have photographed one example.
The book is externally very good with marginal rubbing only; the cloth and gilt bright and clean. Inside it is very foxed in places. The binding of the boards is strong but the text block is tender and a few leaves are loose.
