The book is a series of popular stories based on tribal legends, from the Northern Transvaal (including Vendaland and the Rain-Queen), Basutoland and elsewhere. The author acknowledges advice and encouragement from Professors Dart and Hoernle from the University of the Witwatersrand, and information on native customs from a senior member of the Education Department in Pretoria.

Green cloth-boards with black-lettering to the front and spine. Plain endpapers. xv + 421 pp of text and appendixes with line drawings in the text + frontispiece and 6 other inserted b/w plates.

A new leathercloth spine has strengthened the binding and the original, sunned, spine has been laid down. There is an inscription in pen on the front paste-down. The endpapers and early and late leaves are heavily foxed and there is light to medium foxing throughout the book.
