Although ex-library, this is a very good set. (It was probably the Queenstown Public Library which rebound the volumes.)
Half-bound in tan calf with gilt lettering to the spine and red marbled paper sides, blue-and-white head- and tail-bands, all edges red tinted, plain endpapers, light wove text.
- Vol I. xix + 459 pp of text. In his preface to the third edition of 1871, the author gives the important events that took place in the decade following the nominal end of the history (1859) as the reason for a supplementary chapter to cover the period 1860-1870.
- Vol II. xi + 420 pp of text. The last leaf of this vol, pp 419/420, which had been detached but with no loss of text, had been pinned to the previous leaf, pp 417/418.
- Vol III. xiv + 499 pp of text and index to the three volumes.
CONDITION. There are handwritten library references towards the foot of all the spines. All the marbled-paper sides are rubbed, the corners are lightly bumped, there is minor edge-rubbing. The endpapers are sunned and there are a few light between-section cracks. Library material is attached to all the front endpapers. The binding remains tight and the contents are complete, otherwise unmarked and unfoxed.
The set presents well in a bookcase.
