Director of the "Expedition for Exploring Central Africa", 1834-1836.

2 volumes: 413 + 342 pages, frontispiece portrait in each volume, 32 + 30 plates, original grey cloth, a good set.

Army surgeon, naturalist, explorer and government agent, Smith's expedition went from Graaff-Reinet to Philippolis then east to Lesotho. He trekked through Transorangia to Kuruman, to Mosega and along the southern slopes of the Magaliesberg range. Smith interviewed Mosheshwe, who impressed him very favourably, and entered into negotiations with Mzilikazi at Mosega which resulted in a treaty being signed in Cape Town between the government and the Matabele.
