Page markers throughout indicate passages used by David Hammond-Tooke in the preparation of The Abundant Herds, which he co-authored with Marguerite Poland: this use is indicated on the front free endpaper.
The first editor was a former Under Secretary for Native Affairs in Natal and the second was a Lecturer in Zulu at the University of Natal.
Green cloth-boards with white lettering to the upper panel and the spine. Plain endpapers. Frontispiece + xvi + 341 pp of diary, epilogue, notes and index + some dozen inserted b/w plates not listed in the contents + 2 folding maps at the back, with the larger one in 2 colours.
CONDITION NOTES. The boards and binding are in excellent condition. The front free endpaper has this pencilled note in Hammond-Tooke's handwriting: "David Hammond-Tooke's copy used in 'Abundant Herds'. 1969 1st. Was 27.25. Now R1000". Seven yellow Post-It page markers, referred to above. The contents are complete, unmarked and undiscoloured.
[Although there is no note in the present edition to this effect, this seems to be a reprint of the original edition of 1950, which was limited to 1700 copies - with the pencilled valuation probably referring to the 1950 edition.]
