The author, who was a staff-member of The Star, also researched and catalogued that newspaper's Barnett collection of turn-of-the-century photographs (see Lot 56).
Although published 56 years ago, Godfrey's The Enchanted Door remains perhaps the best Africana book-collectors' primer, and this is a fine copy, number 166 of the first edition of 1200 numbered copies, with a Brodart-protected dustjacket and Dirk Friedlander's bookplate on the front free endpaper verso.
Unclipped dustjacket (R3.00), tan cloth-boards with black lettering to the spine, endpapers printed in sepia with "Africa XXV Nova Tabvla" map, 257 pp of prelims, text and index + 12 inserted pp of b/w photographs on gloss art paper.
Illustrated are Mendelssohn, Kruger, Fehr, J B Robinson, Louis Cohen, Barney Barnato, Frank Harris, Killie Campbell and Johannes van Schaik.
Everyone who participates in these auctions needs a copy if he does not already have one - and this copy is in collectible condition.
