London: MacMillan, 1895. First edition (pp. xvii, 305, index). Large octavo (26 cm) in red publisher’s cloth, gilt titles and decoration; a hundred or so illustrations, many folding, viz., sections of reefs in various mines, mill interiors, rope haulage, headgear, plans of workings; map of the southern Transvaal in rear pocket, etc. An important work on the gold mining industry of the Transvaal (Mendelssohn I, 604- 605). Rebacked, retaining original faded backstrip, hinges neatly repaired. Printed on high quality but heavy, coated paper which, while an excellent medium on which to print the many illustrations, is wearing on the binding, and so the book needs careful handling. Clean, bright contents, maps and images.
