Complete nine-volume sets are rare; although a tenth volume, on the peace, is not included in this set.

Red cloth-boards with embossed black design and gilt lettering to the upper panels and spines, plain endpapers, all page-edges tinted red and [for each of the 9 vols] tissue-protected frontispieces, colour maps + x + 232 pp of b/w-illustrated text on heavy wove paper + 29 inserted plates on gloss art-paper.

CONDITION. Although almost one hundred years old, this set still presents well in the bookcase. If at all, the boards are only lightly rubbed. The spine ends are rubbed or frayed and most of the corners are bumped. The binding remains sound, with some looseness at the front of a few volumes. There are no ownership or other markings and the endpapers are unfoxed. The contents are complete, unmarked and undiscoloured. In the set as a whole, a dozen plates (5% of the total) have become detached from the binding but are still in position.
