Although flawed, this is better than a reading copy. The large folding map between the last page of the text and the index has an unclosed 8 cm tear. The original green cloth-boards, gilt to the spine, are rubbed at the extremities and along part of the fold between the spine and the back cover. There is a small orange crayon scribble on the lower back cover. Although cracked at the endpapers and between some sections, the binding remains good. The leaves are rough cut, with one or more leaves remaining uncut. There are relatively unobtrusive soft pencil or light grey crayon scribbles on the endpapers and a few other pages. There is a 1 cm marginal mark in ink on the last text page and a signature and address on the front free endpaper. There is no foxing or other discolouration.

xii + 247 pp of text and index. No illustrations.

This book, one of the publisher\'s \"British Empire Series\", was \"intended as a concise manual of South Africa history for general use, and as a reading book in schools\". The author was a member of the Legislative Council of the Cape Colony.
