- the unbroken sequence of Livingstone's journal entries over a six-year period, and
- how the material, including Livingstone's notes for his map and his sketches, which form the basis for most of the journal's illustrations, came to be safely delivered to him, first by Stanley and secondly through the efforts of Livingstone's servants
