This is a true first edition (1858) copy of Mrs Gaskell's famous biography of Charlotte Bronte. It was rebound by O E Savarge in 1960 (see images), with the title-page pasted on to a new front free endpaper and the frontispiece loosely inserted. The third illustration - a facsimile of a page of the author's manuscript - is in its correct position facing p 66.
Red buckram-boards, title label to spine with new paper board sides and new blue-patterned endpapers, xi + 486 pp + 14 pp of publisher's announcements, including the uniform edition of Currer Bell (Charlotte Bronte).
