This volume, limited to Leland and Bale, is self-contained. A second volume (not present) covers the lives of Hearne and Wood.

The full tan calf boards have blind-embossed border decorations and gilt rules to the faces, with four raised spine bands, sewn head and tail bands and a gilt on black title panel to the spine. All page edges are marbled. The upper back face has some surface cracking, the corners and top of the spine are rubbed and some of the title panel is missing. The binding is tight but flexible, with no damage to the hinges. The plain violet endpapers are faded toward the edges. J B Winterbotham\'s bookplate is on the front pastedown, but the endpapers are otherwise unmarked. The first four leaves of this fine volume, printed on laid paper, are heavily foxed and a few back leaves are lightly foxed.

The contents of the volume are an engraved frontispiece portrait and vii preliminary pages + 111 numbered pp of text and appendixes + 110 unnumbered pp in a smaller format reprinted from a 1549 original + a further 22 numbered pages of the life of John Bale from 1552, index, errata and publisher\'s notices.
