This edition of Dr Fitzsimons\'s 68-year-old but still authoritative monograph was published as the Memoir No 1 of the Transvaal Museum, of which he was the director.
The blue cloth-boards, gilt-lettered to the upper panel and the spine, are bumped at the extremities and frayed along the whole of the edge between the spine and the back cover. There are cracks at both endpapers but the binding remains sound. A corrigenda and addenda sheet is tipped in on the contents page. There are no owner\'s or other marks and no foxing, although the text page edges are sunned. The xv + 528 pp of illustrated text, bibliography and index are augmented by 24 pp of monochrome plates at the back, printed on heavy art paper, while a folding map, still in its original condition, is mounted on the back paste-down.
