Copy 367 of subscribers' edition of 900 copies signed by the author and the vice-chancellor and principal of the publishing university (University of Pretoria), Professor D M Joubert.
This remains the standard single-volume work on the subject, superseding Austin Robert's pioneering monograph published in 1951.
Clare Abbott's wrap-around colour painting on the dustjacket shows a pack of wild dogs from the Kruger National Park with a high proportion of white in their coats. The jacket is chipped at the extremities and rubbed at the folds.
Brown cloth-boards in near-fine condition with University of Pretoria coat-of-arms and border rules gilt-engraved to the upper board and gilt-engraved lettering and coat-of-arms to the spine. Tightly bound. Endpapers printed with a repeat of the dustjacket painting. [ix] + xxii pp (including the subscribers' edition certificate, list of subscribers, glossary and maps) + 736 pp of illustrated text, appendixes, bibliography and indexes of scientific names, English names and Afrikaans names + 30 inserted colour plates.
Light fingering shows that the copy has been carefully used. No ownership or other markings, damage or discolouration. Except for the lightly damaged dustjacket, this is a near-fine copy of a book now 33 years old.
