First edition, first impression, first state of the rarest James Bond title.
Starting with Casino Royale in 1953 Fleming would publish a new James Bond adventure annually until his death in 1964. The Man With The Golden Gun was his last full-length James Bond novel.
With the publication of this novel Fleming was at the height of his popularity and the publisher's were confident enough to publish 82,000 copies in the first print run - which was a great leap from the modest first print run of 4,728 copies for his first novel Casino Royale, published 12 years earlier.
According to the Gilbert bibliography the Jonathan Cape archives revealed that only 940 copies were published with the embossed golden gun. The publishers realized that the cost of continuing the print-run with the gilt embossed design would be prohibitive, so the remaining 81,000 were published with plain black covers.
