The Moravian Atlas , embracing Statistics of the Church of the United Brethren in her Home and Foreign Departments, compiled from the most recent and authentic sources.

Place of publication, publishers, date: [No place given, but slip at front mentions A. Smith and B. Harvey of Fulneck, near Leeds]: 1853.

Small oblong 4to (4 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches; 185 x 220mm). Pp. [i-]iv, 5-36 + 1 small format slip soliciting subscriptions at front + one small format errata slip at the rear. 12 lithographic maps by Augustus Peterman (and others?), including 1 hand-coloured world map, 11 other hand-tinted maps. An interesting and informative text on Moravian establishments and missions around the world, together with a fine series of maps by an important figure in the development  of cartography in Great Britain in the second part of the 19th century. The 'Atlas....' is very rare: Goodspeed's of Boston had a copy for sale in 1932, but  there are no other records of a copy for sale or at auction. OCLC lists 6 copies in institutions worldwide.

The maps include a world map; the United States and Canada; South Africa; South-East Australia, and  various Caribbean locations. The text includes a 2pp. 'List of Untimely Deaths of Missionaries' since 1735, giving names, cause and place of death.

W. Gunn Malin Catalogue of Books relating to ... Unitas Fratrum, or United Brethren [Phila.: 1881], p.111; OCLC 16843871; Phillips Atlases I, 180; Rumsey 1868 (incorrectly titled 'Moravia Atlas).
