This comprehensive book was the successor to the same authors' 1965 volume with a similar title - The Old Houses of the Cape. (Mary Alexander Cook died before the publication of the present book, but had completed her work on it.)
Two-colour photographic dustjacket, full-bound in terra cotta cloth-boards, white to the upper panel and spine, plain endpapers, title-page, frontispiece, viii + 456 b/w pp of double-column text, including introduction, glossary, bibliography and index, illustrated in the text with some 150 diagrams of gables, many photographs of buildings as well as regional maps and town plans for some forty towns and cities in Greater Cape Town and the Western Cape.
CONDITION. The dustjacket is complete and unclipped but with a sunned spine and extensive rubbing towards the edges of the upper panel. The binding and boards remain in fine condition. The endpapers and contents are equally fine - complete, unmarked except for an owner inscription on the front free endpaper, and undiscoloured.
Most serious students of the early architecture and buildings of the Western Cape will already have their copies of this volume, but this is an opportunity to acquire a near-fine copy, though in a damaged dustjacket.
