After nearly half a century, this set remains perhaps the best short general history of South Africa.
The volumes were first published in 1969 and 1971. These copies were lithographically reprinted in 1970 and 1971 from corrected sheets of the first editions.
NOTE. The editors noted that, on legal opinion, Chapter IX of Vol II, "African Nationalism in South Africa, 1910-1964" by Leo Kuper, needed to be withdrawn from the South African edition; but it appears complete and as it was written in this English edition of the set.
Two-colour dustjackets, dark-blue cloth-boards, gilt to the spines, rounded spines, plain endpapers, text on 80 gm2 wove paper.
- Vol I. Unclipped dustjacket, 75 shillings net, xxiv + 502 pp of text, bibliography and index + 7 maps and 6 tables in the text + 3 inserted monochrome plates on art paper.
- Vol II. Price-clipped dustjacket, xvi + 584 pp of text, bibliography and index + 10 tables 14 figures and 2 maps in the text + 4 inserted folding maps on light smooth paper.
CONDITION. There are a few small chips and unclosed tears to the dustjackets of both volumes. The boards and the spine gilding remain as new. The contents, including the inserted plates and maps, are complete, unmarked and with no foxing or other discolouration.
The overall condition is fine and collectable: a lightly and carefully read set.
