The Standard Edition is the same as the First and Subscribers' Editions except:
- that it is full-bound in beige buckram (First: brown calf; Subscribers': blue simulated leather)
- that is not numbered (First: 300 copies; Subscribers: 350 copies)
- that there is no frontispiece (this was Plate 1, the landscape format Ostrich and Ground Hornbill plate, which was folded and loosely inserted in the two special editions)
Plates 31 and 32 (destroyed by enemy action in World War 2) as well as 40 and 48 (lost while on loan) are missing from all three editions.
Apart from being much larger than the plates in the original editions, the images in these three editions were reproduced by lithography, and are sharper and more accurate than those in the original letterpress plates printed in England.
This elephant folio volume is full-bound in beige buckram with gilt lettering to the upper panel and the spine. The text and illustrations - [xii] pp of prelims, including 2-col title-page, + 51 pp of full-colour plates (rectos) + 51 pp of captions (versos) - were printed on 155 g/m2 Mellotex matt high white twin wire offset printing paper from Tullis Russell of Scotland. The design, production, reproduction, printing and binding of the volume were undertaken by Cape Town individuals and contractors.
CONDITION NOTES. The copy remains tightly bound and head-and-tail bands, covers, endpapers and contents are all in fine condition, unmarked except for a description in soft pencil on the front free endpaper, and undiscoloured.
