With a sketch of his life by Leitch Ritchie.
Bound in a fine contemporary fine dark brown half leather binding with raised spine bands, gilt rules, and leather corners over marbled paper covered boards. This is the scarce first edition, published a year before the more commonly encountered second edition.
The binding is in as-new condition. The contents are crisp, clean, and bright with no spotting and precious little sign of age-toning. Even the untrimmed text block edges are remarkably clean. The sole previous ownership mark is a discreet inked owner name on the ffep, so old that it has faded to near-illegibility.
"The best edition of Pringle's poetical works, with a memoir extending to 149 pages. In an 'advertisement' it is stated that the work "is not published in the usual way, but entirely for the benefit of Mr. Pringle's widow," who was left in very poor circumstances. The volume contains a steel portrait engraving of the author by W. Finden, a vignette, and an illustration entitled "The Bechuana Boy," engraved after Landseer". Mendelssohn Vol II Page 188
