This is one of the sought-after early-twentieth century illustrated books to feature the work of a famous artist, in this case Arthur Rackham. Copies in such complete and good condition are rare.

The translated libretto and illustrations will appeal to lovers of Wagner and opera, while the Arthur Rackham illustrations may have an even wider appeal.

Full-bound in tan buckram with gilt-embossed design and lettering to the upper panel and spine, top page-edge tinted brown, cream printed endpapers with Rackham design + x pp of prelims (including 2 half-titles, a colour frontispiece with tissue guard and a 2-colour title-page with a monochrome Rackham design) + 160 pp of text on heavy cream wove paper + 33 additional colour illustrations tipped in on calendered cream cards with tissue-guards and inserted into the binding, with illustration captions printed on the tissues.

CONDITION. A new matching spine has been fitted with the original spine cover laid down, and the binding has been strengthened The frontispiece and other colour plates and tissue-guards are all present and correctly bound in. The front free endpaper is missing. The copy is otherwise complete, with no ownership or other marks. There is some early text foxing but, if at all, the colour plates and tissues are are only very slightly foxed.
