In his foreword General Smuts notes that Collyer, his chief of staff in the East Africa campaign, was "in a special position to know or to learn the circumstances and difficulties of the task which faced us". However, "there is nothing in it of a one-sided Allied story. Full justice is done to the brilliant performance of General von Lettow Vorbeck, his German officers and his African Askari army."
One corner of the red cloth-boards, black lettered to the front and spine, is noticeably rubbed. The other three corners and the boards themselves are very lightly rubbed. The spine is unsunned and the binding is tight. The plain endpapers are unmarked, as are the book's xxi + 299 pp of text and index. There is light sunning towards the page edges as well as an occasional foxing spot.
All 21 of the folding colour maps are present, crisp and untorn.
