This is a fine copy of the illustrated centenary edition of 1968, with its 20 pp introduction by Doris Lessing, a modern novelist sometimes compared to Schreiner. It includes the text of the original preface by Ralph Iron, Schreiner's pseudonym.

Full-bound in blue cloth-boards with gilt design and lettering to the upper face and gilt lettering to the spine; pasted to the front cover is a brown-and-gilt reproduction of a woodcut ("Farmhouse at Prince Albert in the Cape") by J H Pierneef. Tan-printed cream endpapers advertising Hutchinson books published at the same time as Schreiner's novel. Half-title blurb from Lessing's introduction. Title-page illustrated with a duotone portrait of Olive Schreiner and her facsimile signature. xxxiv pp of introduction, preface, glossary and contents. 301 pp of illustrated text, notes and acknowledgments - all on medium-weight matt-art paper.

CONDITION. Complete, unmarked, undiscoloured and fine throughout, though with the lightest edge-rubbing of the lower cover board.
