The author states in the preface that 'The Third Man' was never written to be read but only to be seen, and the book is dedicated to Carol Reed, the director of the film, which is now regarded as a classic.
' The Fallen Idol' was the film title imposed by the distributors, however the scenerio was a short story , 'The Basement Room', and the African anecdotes with which the butler, Baines, regales the little boy left in his charge (the basement room is the servant's quarters). Greene had just returned from a trip to Africa to research his book 'Journey Without Maps '(1936).
Graham Greene, (1904–1991) was an British novelist regarded as one of the great writers of the last century. He wrote serious Catholic novels and thrillers, or "entertainments" as he called them.
