Stock certificate, with coupons, the Transvaal & Delagoa Investment Company, gilt wooden frame, under non-reflective glass, matching mount board, 540 x 690mm, condition; very good.

The main asset of The Transvaal and Delagoa Bay Investment Company was the Transvaal and Delagoa Bay Collieries.

In 1899, Winston Churchill knocked on the door of John Howard, the manager of ’The Transvaal and Delagoa Bay Collieries’ at Witbank. Churchill was then making his escape from imprisonment by the Boer Republics at the State Model School in Pretoria. Howard fed Churchill and hid him in the underground stables of the Collieries while Boer forces searched high and low for him. Also Howard hid him behind some packing cases at the Witbank offices of the Transvaal and Delagoa Bay Collieries. (Randolph Churchill ’ Winston S. Churchill’, volume one, chapter fourteen). This episode had lasting consequences for Churchill as he and the family were still in touch with the families of those involved locally with the ‘escape’ a century later (Celia Sandys “Churchill: Wanted Dead or Alive”).

This warrant gives the holder the option of purchasing twenty five shares of common stock in the company.
