Dorothy Levitt, (1882 - 1922) was a renowned pioneer of female independence, female motoring, motor racing, the most successful female competitor in Great Britain, victorious speedboat driver, holder of the water speed record, and holder of the Ladies World Land speed record. She was lauded as the first English woman ever to compete in a motor race and was also a noted motoring writer and journalist. This classic book written in 1909 was based on her column in The Graphic. It contained many tips, including carrying a ladies hand mirror, to "occasionally hold up to see what is behind you". Thus, she can be said to have pioneered the rear view mirror seven years before it was adopted by manufacturers. It would seem to be excedingly scarce in first edition. I have been unable to track another copy online or in many years of book auction records. However reprints and facsimiles are plentiful, attesting to the importance of this title.

This is a very good plus near fine bright copy in the original decorated green cloth. There is some browning of both free endpapers, otherwise the book is bright, unmarked and unfoxed. Top edge stained green and others uncut. 125pp. with 6pp. adverts at the rear. 27 full page glossy photographic plates.
