Of its genre, a massive (2.2 kg) scientifically accurate but popular and richly illustrated survey of the world\'s birds then surviving, this book was little short of magnificent when it was first published 46 years ago. The author and artist, respectively British and American ornithologists, calculated that 8580 species of birds were known to be alive on earth, representing 154 families.

The otherwise better than good laminated jacket (slight creasing and two 1 cm tears) is marred by brown tape marks on the inside. The blue cloth boards remain in very good condition although the upper front cover is slightly rubbed and there is a single small square tape mark near the foot of the front cover as well as several tape marks on the back cover. A few tape marks are also present on the endpapers.

The book is free of other marks and faults, and the 288 large-format pages of text and mainly colour illustrations are present, clean and undiscoloured.
