Helen Martins used cement, glass, and wire to decorate the interior of the Owl House and later built sculptures in the garden. She drew inspiration from Christian biblical texts, the poetry of Omar Khayyam, and works of the mystic, William Blake. Athol Fugard's play on The Owl House is called 'The Road to Mecca', which was later made into a film starring Kathy Bates, Yvonne Bryceland and the Playwright.
