\" . . . Illustrated by a selection of Thomas Baines\'s watercolours, drawings and prints. With captions and a new introduction by F R Bradlow\"
Professor J P R Wallis, some of whose books were published in the Oppenheimer series, was the leading authority on the explorer and painter Thomas Baines, about whom little was known before Wallis began his researches.
The origin of the present xx + 235 pp book was Wallis\'s earlier book Thomas Baines of King\'s Lynn, published in England in 1941. Perhaps because it came out during the Second World War, Wallis\'s 1941 book did not sell well, although used copies are found from time to time and often priced at $150 or more. More than thirty years later, after Wallis had died, Balkema republished the book in this new format and with many additions.
This is an unread copy in as new condition except for some rubbing and edge imperfections of the unlaminated dustjacket. A reproduction of one of Baines\'s paintings is pasted on to the jacket. The brown cloth boards, gilt to the front and spine, are slightly sprung but otherwise perfect, as are the unmarked and undiscoloured plain endpapers and the xx + 235 pp of text and index. There are eight inserted colour plates and many monochrome illustrations and a map in the text.
