Thomas Baines was a 19th-century artist and the first person to capture on canvas the beauty of the Victoria Falls with his luminous paintings. In the company of the hunter James Chapman, they set off in 1861 on their west coast to east coast expedition. with the intention of visiting the Falls, and then from lower down the Zambezi, boating to the mouth of the great river.
The eventually succeeded in making many scientific discoveries and in creating magnificent pictorial works on the flora, fauna and peoples of these lands.
