The British consul to Mozambique, Elton spent considerable time fighting the slave trade in the region. He explored the region around Lake Nyassa and enjoyed considerable sport after elephant, hippopotamus, impala, eland, black rhinoceros and buffalo. His descriptions of hunting elephant with his two rifles, ‘Big Henry’ and ‘Little Henry,’ are particularly vivid. During his return to the coast, he contracted fever and died. His journals were arranged, edited and completed by his hunting companion H. B. Cotterill. This copy being ex.-lib with faded paper label at base of the spine and evidence of label removal from the front pictorial cover. Recased with original spine and covers laid over green cloth. New endpapers, front inner hinge starting. Well illustrated with full page plates and numerous text drawings, folding panorama, and 3 folding maps. Scattered foxing, a bit heavier to the panorama and maps. A sound, tight reading copy.
