2 volumes, 341 + 347 pages, frontispiece portrait in volume 1, chromolithographic frontispiece in volume 2, engraved vignettes on the title pages (volume I. 'The Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope), folding map - torn at first fold, blind stamped brown cloth with gilt titling on the spines. Light foxing on the frontispiece in volume 1 and staining at the top corner of the frontispiece in volume 2 which also affects the endpapers, contents crisp, bindings leaning out of square, overall a good set in the original cloth with the endpapers intact with the binder’s ticket of Leighton Son and Hodge at the base of the rear endpaper.
McLeod was appointed British Consul to Mozambique in 1856 travelling via the Cape and Natal. He gives a detailed account of his service there and the condition of the country as well as much information on the slave trade.
