Folding map showing the route he took through southern Africa opposite page 1.
The Rev. John Campbell was sent by the London Missionary Society to inspect missionary settlements throughout South Africa in 1812, the year after Dr Van der Kemp had died. He spent 17 months on his journey and recorded much interesting information. He met with Hottentot chiefs in his travels along the southern coast to the Albany area, then went north through Graaff-Reinet, across the Orange River to Griqualand and then he followed the Orange to Namaqualand before turning south to Cape Town.
