This is a good copy of the second edition of 1799.

The xxviii pages of prelims includes a glossary and a list of nearly 400 subscribers (including the Royal and other libraries, Sir Joseph Banks, John Barrow, the Earl of Chesterfield, Lord Dundas, James Fox, Lord Palmerston and William Wilberforce) + 372 pp of text and vocabulary + 2 pp of words and music + an appendix of xcii pages + an engraved frontispiece and 5 other inserted engravings + 3 folding maps.

BINDING AND CONDITION NOTES

Full bound in tan calf. Title gilt on black panel in second spine pocket. Plain endpapers. All page edges gilt.

The covers and spine are extensively rubbed. The front endpaper is cracked but the hinges are undamaged and the binding remains tight. Both endpapers are sunned towards the page edges. There is no other text discolouration. The music notation pages are sunned, with offset to the previous page and the verso of one panel of the following map.

There are no owner names or other marks.

The frontispiece and other engravings are pasted in. There is light offset from the frontispiece to the title-page. The three maps are present and undamaged, save that the second map, at the beginning of the appendix, needs to be refolded as it is now proud of the text-block with the 0.5-1.5 cm exposed part sunned.

All in all, this is a collectable copy of a good edition of Surgeon Mungo Park's classic book. The realistic reserve would give a collector scope for refolding the badly folded map and possibly commissioning a rebinding with new endpapers.
