This was the second of Reitz's trilogy of autobiographies about and after the Anglo-Boer War, with General Smuts, who, with his wife, nursed Reitz back to health at their Irene farm after he returned to South Africa from his self-exile to Madagascar, contributing the preface.
Fine first edition copies are rare and valuable.
Blue cloth-boards, with gilt lettering to the spine, plain endpapers, 351 pp of prelims, text and index.
This copy, however, though still a first (1933) edition, has an overall rating of no more than G+, with a repaired spine, original spine cover laid down and new endpapers added to tighted the binding. The bumped upper-board corners and the rubbed state of both covers have not been repaired. There is a 1933 ownership signature on the fly-leaf.
