The stars of this book on four pre-World War II record attemps by cars through Africa are a Morris 10/4 (London to Timbuktu), a Morris 6 25 hp (Folkestone to Kano), a Rolls Royce Phantom III (Derby to Nairobi) and a Wolseley 6 18/85. Despite falling off a high bridge into a river near the halfway point (see one of the images), the Wolseley still set a new London to Cape Town record.
The grey buckram-boards, green lettered to the spine, are in good shape apart from a small hole at the foot of the spine, which is sunned. (See the first image.) The book-block has been rebound into the original case, with the endpapers strengthened. There is an owner's signature on the front paste-down. The folding map at the front and the facsimile of the original map on the back endpaper are shown in the images. The contents - 320 pp of text and errata slip + frontispiece and 20 other pp of inserted b/w plates - are unfoxed and bright and the only markings are brief pencil additions to the contents pages.
