The interest of this \"Bulletin 278\" of the Department of Agriculture (price threepence) is partly in its summary of the veld management work done since 1922 - including the work begun in 1934 by Dr Pole Evans, director of the Botanical Survey and more famous for his multi-volume South African flora series - and partly because it provided the first authoritive guidance on when and when not to burn veld and on the way this should be done when it should be done. Remarkably, 64 years later, this guidance, reinforced by later publications, is by no means always followed.

Buff paper covers side stitched on to 40 pp of text, tables and four maps, of which an agro-ecological map is a fold-out. Except for a few numerals in ink on p 7, the contents are clean and bright
