This collection of photographs is not a pictorial history of the Colony of Natal--it is essentially an entertainment: glimpses of the activities and events in the daily lives of ordinary people.
The photographs reproduced here have been chosed mainly from collections in the Killie Campbell Africana Librrary, Durban: the Natl Government Archives: the Natal Museum, Pietermartizburg and from the personal collection of Mr S.S. Singh of Durban. Some ninety per cent of the photographs are unsigned.The remainder are signed by the photographer; but only a few of these people are well known and some information concerning them has been kindly provided by Brian Spencer. Ivan Antonowitz has been responsible for the expert rephotographing of the old photographs.
