Any edition of this book - one of the publisher\'s \"Ons Geskiedenis-Serie\" [\"Our History Series\"] - is now rare. The writer of the foreword noted that the author\'s military and political roles were well known but that he had now successfully ventured into the spheres of history and autobiograpy.

The book\'s main coverage extends from the Great Trek of the 1830s to the conclusion of the second Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902, in which General Kemp was an active participant.

The grey cloth-boards, brown and green to the front and green to the spine, are in very good condition but the spine is sunned. The binding is firm. The plain endpapers are lightly sunned and there is an owner\'s signature on the front free page. The x + 476 pp of text + maps and pen-portraits in the text + the frontispiece and five other inserted monochrome plates are all present, unmarked and undiscoloured.
