In September of 1956, the author wrote (translated): "Why this book? - 'In order that the next generation should know the truth.' This was the last task General de Wet set for me shortly before his death. I took it as an order and although it has taken me more than thirty years to obey that order, it is not too late, for what was then the next generation is now the present generation."

This valuable, party autobiographical, book, tells the "Afrikaner story" from the perspective of a 1956 memory that may not have been equalled.

The dustjacket, which includes a photograph of the author on the back, is chipped and torn but essentially complete. The red cloth-boards, black to the front and spine, are rubbed at the corners and the spine extremities. The plain endpapers are unmarked and undiscoloured. The contents - v + 397 pp of illustrated text and index - are in near-original condition.
