William GOLDING (1911-1993). Lord of the Flies. New York: Coward-McCann, 1955. Octavo (8 x 5 3/8inches; 203 x 137mm). Pp. [i-viii; 1-]3-243[-244]. (Pages lightly tanned throughout). Original green cloth, ochre spine, green lettering on spine, original unclipped dust-jacket (head of spine bumped, dust-jacket with some rubbing to edges, small tears and creases at top of backstrip [see images]).
First American edition – a nice copy of a classic, if psychologically dark, work: a plane-crash load of schoolboys shed their veneer(?) of civilized respectability and revert to primitive savagery: "I should have thought that a pack of British boys would have been able to put up a better show than that." (p.242).
