London: [printed by S. & J. Bentley, Wilson, & Fley], 1846. 16mo. (5 ¼ x 4 1/8 inches). Pp. [1-]176. 1 folding engraved map, illustrations (some full-page). (Light soiling to outer margins of a few leaves).

Original green diaper-grained cloth, spine and covers blocked in blind, the upper cover titled in gilt (see images), light cream glazed endpapers. (Some light discoloration, corner slightly bumped, small holes to lower joint [see images])

First edition and quite scarce. The Introduction includes a summary of the various attempts to find the north-west passage. The author of the introduction notes that “An expedition [to find the north-west passage] was fitted out … about a year ago, and placed under the command of the veteran Arctic explorer, Captain Franklin, who is at this very time wintering in the frozen regions.,..”. The rest of the book concentrates on three different aspects of Arctic exploration as they were experienced by the various expeditions.
