157 pages, 3 full page plates, brown cloth boards, title in black with gilt, soiled on edges of front cover, spine faded and, uncut edges, pencil drawing on front free end paper inscribed “To Richard P Haig, 20th Imperial Yeomanry from the artist”, contents bright.

The third plate opposite page 122 is signed BM in the bottom right corner and may be attributed to the author.

From Hackett (R.G.) South African War Books. Experiences of a trooper in a volunteer corps raised in India. The author gives an account of the battle of Houtnek and of medical services during the campaign. A complete record of the corps in South Africa is given in Pearse (H.H.S) The history of Lumsden's Horse.

Lumsden's Horse was the name given to the Indian Mounted Infantry Corps, which was formed in Calcutta in 1899 by Lt Colonel Dugald Mactavish Lumsden .The Corps left Calcutta 250 strong in February 1900 to take part in the Second Boer War, under the command of Field Marshall Lord Roberts. They took part in the march to Bloemfontein, the occupation of Johannesburg and Pretoria, the pursuit of de Wet, and the Barberton & De Kaap campaigns against the Boers.
